CBD…What is it good for?

I’m a big music head.  Whenever I think of things, people and situations there’s normally a music soundtrack that goes along with it.  When it comes to CBD…the song WAR comes to mind by Edwin Starr but sung in a different way.  CBD, uh good God ya’ll…What is it good for?  Absolutely everything, say it again.  Lol…Well maybe it’s not good for everything but it is very beneficial and definitely good for a lot of things.

There been such an influx of popularity right now concerning CBD, when it comes to supplements it almost has been talked up to be the end all and be all in a lot of holistic communities.  I live in North Carolina, which is a state that made medicinal CBD legal in 2014 and as of 2017 under a pilot program hemp was approved for growing in North Carolina.  CBD is very easy to get here and it’s everywhere!  I was driving by a gas station and saw a sign that said, “CBD sold here!” A gas station?!  And in national news I heard talks of a soft drink company planning on adding CBD in their sodas, which was interesting to me.  It seemed kind of counterproductive, a very sugaring, preservative and additive loaded soft drink with a natural health supplement added to it claiming to be good for you.

I first heard about CBD in 2013, I didn’t know all the particulars about it but I had read about the benefits of taking CBD oil on a website I found and I was intrigued.  I don’t know how I came upon the website but I’ve always been passionate about health and natural ways of healing so it was probably during one of my many late night info binges where I found it.   At the time I was living in New Jersey and it felt like I was doing something illegal even by just looking at the website.  My first thoughts were that, I had to buy some CBD oil to try it and keep in the house and then my second thoughts were, what if I get arrested for smuggling CBD oil into the state.  So needless to say I never ordered and CBD turned into a fleeting thought until the spring of 2018.

In the Spring of 2018 I moved to North Carolina and within the first couple of months of moving met a doctor who had started a hemp program for his patients suffering from chronic pain.  He created this program to achieve his goal of not just helping his patients get off addictive pain medications but to also be a part in the reduction of opioid addictions plaguing the country.  Five years ago after first reading about CBD, I was now in another state attending one of the doctor’s hemp education workshops and learning all about CBD.   It’s funny how things will reappear in your life when they are meant to and at the time they’re suppose to reappear.  From that workshop I now know what CBD is and how it works on the body.

Even with the huge popularity of CBD there are still lots of people still not sure what CBD is, what it’s good for, how to take it and how to purchase it.  In this post I will do my best to provide all the information needed so that you too can have a better understanding of CBD.

CBD is the acronym for Cannabidiol and it comes from the hemp plant (for more info on hemp go to my page  here).   Out of over 100 cannabinoids identified (cannabinoids are just compounds of the plant), cannabidiol (CBD) is the most dominant.  CBD has a wide scope of medicinal applications, such as anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and anti-psychotic.  What makes CBD so effective in the human body is that humans already have a system within us which mimics the properties of  cannabidiol or should I flip it around and say cannabidiol has properties within its plant compounds that mimics what humans have in our endocannabinoid system.  The endocannabinoid system which is in all of us is built of receptors and neuro-chemicals responsible for our digestion, sleep and pain.  The endocannabinoid system is like a bridge between the body and brain and its function is to keep the body in balance.   Our bodies are built to naturally produce our own cannabinoids to create that balance.  However there are challenges like illness, consumption of unhealthy foods, environmental changes which can prevent our cannabinoids from functioning at optimal level.  CBD actually aides the endocannabinoid system by binding to receptors located in the system which allows our bodies to do the work it’s naturally born to do which is to heal itself and be in balance.

CBD has a very small percentage of THC but not enough to be psychoactive, meaning it will not get you, high, lifted or raised.  Remember CBD is always trying to help keep the body in balance and when taking THC on its own there’s a level of imbalance which causes the high.  This is why when taking CBD there’s no high symptoms because the whole goal is to keep the body in balance.  CBD provides assistance to deal with anxiety, immunity issues, inflammation, high blood sugar, pain and many other health issues.  Now this is not to discount the need for THC, THC can help with nausea, pain and in combination with CBD makes for a very powerful remedy for cancer and other serious ailments

The most popular way to take CBD is in oil form.  There are other ways to take it such as a tincture, in food or topically, but taking it straight as an oil gets it into your system much faster.  Now CBD is not like a pharmaceutical pill where its taken and immediate pseudo results appear, there’s a little more work involved.  The amount of CBD oil a person should take is dependent on the person’s genetics and other factors such as weight, diet, metabolism and environment.   When starting to take CBD oil it’s suggested to take 1/4 of a dropper for a week, document how you feel and then the following week up the dosage to 1/2 of a dropper, again document, on the third week up the dosage to 3/4 of a dropper and document.  All this is done to find the perfect dosage for your needs.  You can tell you’ve found your sweet spot when your symptoms start to diminish.

How to take the CBD oil is to place the dropper of CBD under the tongue hold for about 10 seconds and then swallow.  The effects should be felt in 5 to 20 minutes.  A lot of times I will take the oil in this matter but I will also put drops of CBD in my teas and smoothies.

When buying CBD oil there are three very important things to look out for to make sure you’re getting a quality CBD product.

  1. CBD oil should be full spectrum not isolate.  Full spectrum means multiple cannabinoids, omegas and other nutrients are in the oil.  Isolate means it’s been processed to remove certain beneficial compounds from the hemp plant to leave just the CBD.  (You definitely want benefits of the whole plant).
  2. The CBD is derived from Industrial Field Hemp.  Industrial field hemp is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant and it’s grown specifically for CBD because of the very low THC levels.
  3. It’s lab certified and 3rd party tested.  To get a product 3rd party tested is quite pricey.  So when you see that a company has sent their product out for lab certification you can rest assured the company is transparent in what they are saying and selling.  When the CBD oil is 3rd party tested it weeds out the scammers and frauds.

My personal experiences using CBD oil have been very positive.   My usage of CBD oil went from every night to only when needed.  Initially I was taking the oil everyday to assist with my anxiety and menopause symptoms. When I started to see my symptoms lessen and see balance in my body, I limited my daily usage to every so often.  I use it at night if I need help sleeping or if I’m experiencing inflammation.  I have also used it topically for cold sores, small cuts and bruises, when used topically I’ve personally noticed immediate healing.  One time I sprained my ankle and massaged the oil right into the ankle and the next day I could put my whole weight on it with out even a limp.  These are some of the reasons why CBD oil will always be a part of my holistic first aid kit.
